Stewart stars in Blaze win

Goaltender Brian Stewart posted a 38-save shut-out as Genting Casino Coventry Blaze claimed a 1-0 shoot-out win over Hull Stingrays at Hull Arena in the Elite League.

The Canadian, this week short-listed for Elite League Netminder of the Year, was in scintillating form as he registered his fourth shut-out of the season.

Stewart denied Jordan Mayer, Dominic Osman, Will Frederick and Jordan Knox in the shoot-out, with Jereme Tendler, Derek Lee and Ben Arnt missing for Blaze. 175px-CoventryBlaze

It was left to Ryan O’Marra to clinch the extra point for Blaze, who now have a three-point cushion in sixth place with two regular-season games remaining.

Coach Chuck Weber said: “We had some chances in the first period on the powerplay and they had some chances in two four on threes in overtime as well as regulation.

“It was two teams fighting for play-off seeding, Hull fighting to get in and credit to them for getting to the dance. Now we have to get ready for Belfast on Friday.

“I think it will be a complete travesty if Stewie does not get Netminder of the Year. If you look at the way the season has gone and the amount of shots he has faced, he has the number one saves percentage and especially the quality of shots he was seeing the first couple of months of the year to keep this team in the hunt.

“I don’t think there is a better goalie in the league than him but it’s not my call and I only get one vote!”
