Steelheads Drop One in Sudbury

The Steelheads did not get the outcome they were hoping, falling 8-4 to the Sudbury Wolves.

First Period

Following an exciting win at home against the Windsor Spitfires in last night’s Pucks N’ Paws game, the Mississauga Steelheads hit the road again to take on the Sudbury Wolves in their second of six meetings of the season.

It did not take long for the action to start between teams where Steelheads’ defender Isaac Enright was called for a roughing penalty just 1:30 into the opening frame. With seven seconds into the Wolves powerplay, Quentin Musty took a shot from the point where it bounced off the boards onto David Goyettes stick to get on the board first.

Not long later, Kocha Delic carried the puck into the Trout zone where he found Alex Pharand to score Sudburys’ second goal of the game. The Wolves were not done there, as Dijibril Toure jumped into the rush receiving a pass from Nick DeGrazia beating Alessio Beglieri making it 3-0 with 3:47 into the game.

Down by three, the Steelheads ran into some more penalty trouble, but that was no problem for Owen Beck. Twenty-two seconds into the penalty, the centreman was able to capitalize to put the Trout within two. Beck’s goal was assisted by captain Ethan Del Mastro.

On the same penalty, however, Pharand was able to add to the Wolves lead to score his second of the game, twenty-six seconds after the Steelheads’ goal. With 3:38 left in the period, the Wolves struck again as Alex Assadourian made it 5-1.

After the Wolves fifth goal, Beglieri was replaced by Mississauga’s backup goaltender Chazz Nixon, marking his first-career OHL game. Earning a power play late in the frame, the Steelheads made sure to capitalize. In the dying seconds of the frame, Luca Del Bel Belluz beat Ranger to record his 100th career OHL point. The Columbus Blue Jackets draftee’s goal was assisted by Kasper Larsen and Zakary Lavoie, and sent the Trout down 5-2 going into the second period.

Second Period

After a high scoring first period, the Steelheads looked to reset and get back into the game. However, Toure was able to snipe the puck high glove side on Nixon 5:46 into the middle frame. With 4:04 left in the period, Sudbury’s Ethan Larmand passed it to Marc Boudreau, sending a back-hander high on Nixon to get the Wolves on the board once again.

Not going down without a fight, the Trout kept battling into the final seconds of the period once again. With 29 seconds remaining and on the power play, James Hardie found Del Bel Belluz, who sent it to Callaghan skating in the slot, burying it past his former teammate Ranger to make it 7-3.

Third Period

Going into the third period down by four, the Steelheads looked to set the tone early by trying to get back into the game. Even though the Wolves had a comfortable lead, the Trout did not stop. They pressed Sudbury, forcing them to take two penalties giving them a two-man advantage for two minutes.

With 1:18 into the 5-on-3 power play, Hardie sent the puck across the slot to Del Bel Belluz, who was standing at the back door and tapped it past Ranger to get his sixth point in just two games. Beck also got the assist to get his second point of the game.

Following the Steelheads solid play late in the period, Veccia was ultimately penalized for tripping with 4:49 left in the final frame. The Wolves were able to successfully move the puck around where Andre Anania was left wide open, getting a shot off in the slot to extend the lead to 8-4.

Although the Steelheads outshot their opponents 39-29, the Wolves held onto the lead to end the frame, giving them an 8-4 win.
