Steelers thump Flyers

The Steelers delivered a four point weekend tonight as they completed back to back victories against a depleted Fife Flyers.

Davey Phillips, Alex Graham and Brendan Connolly were on the injured list with Cole Shudra and Brandon Whistle skating for their NIHL team. Rok Stojanovic was back in goal tonight with Curtis Warburton returning to back up duty.

The Steelers were made to weather the storm as Fife gave everything they had left in energy reserves to lead the first period by two goals, before the men in Orange took over. The Steelers put away six unanswered as the Flyers run out of gas after playing three in three and once again playing with only four defencemen.

Jacob Benson and Greg Chase were the scorers for the Flyers in the first period; the first coming only 29 seconds in, assisted by Naslund and Magee before Chase got his name on the scoresheet at 3.52, assisted by Anderson.

The Steelers had pulled the game back level by the end of the second period as Justin Hodgman and Tanner Eberle continued their good form with them both finding the back of the Flyers net. Goals timed at 25.10 and 37.29 with Eberle and Hodgman swapping assists on each other’s goals and Sointu and Todd adding to their season’s points tally.

The Flyers simply had no answer in the third as the Steelers began to run (or skate) away with the game. The third goal coming quickly into the period at 41.44 when Sointu beat Owen with Eberle and Hodgman once again picking up the assists.

Next came Marco Vallerand to bag his 19th goal of the the Elite League season and take him to 40 points in only 25 league games. This times effort coming on a short handed breakaway at 49.02 where he made no mistake. Assist to Latal on this play.

Less than two minutes later at 51.27, Martin Latal used his strength to hold off his man to become the next Steeler to beat Owen. The speedy and gritty Traversa and returning Saxrud-Danielsen on the scoresheet with assists this time.

The Steelers were ruthless in the third as Traversa added a well-deserved sixth at 59.17. Polak and Mosey picking up the assists on the final goal.

In a repeat of last night, Shane Owen and Tanner Eberle picked up the Man of the Matche awards for their teams.

After another weekend of action, the Steelers continue to lead the league with a two point and three game advantage over the Cardiff Deveils and a five point advantage over the Belfast Giants who sit on the same number of games.
