Steelers landed the first punch in the double header against the Belfast Giants tonight. Although it wasn’t possible to land a knockout punch this weekend, the points may come as a major advantage towards the end of the season when deciding the league title.
Mason Mitchell found himself back in the line-up tonight in place of Brendon Connolly, but an injury to Scott Allen during the game will probably see Connolly re-join the line up tomorrow night.
The first period saw neither team able to beat both impressive netminders as Greenfield and Whistle stood up tall when required to deny chances for both teams. Belfast also seeing off the only penalty of the game as Cullen was called for tripping.
However, even with a goalless period in the first, tonight proved what a good game of hockey can be even in a low scoring affair as the Steelers were able to take the points with only two goals.
Those two goals were required to come from behind as the Belfast Giants took the lead in the second period as Owre picked up the puck from Bast infront of the blue paint and finished well above Greenfield. Conway with the second assist in the 24th minute.
The Steelers hit straight back in the 31st minute when Pitule matched the Giants effort with a nice take from in-front of the Giants blue paint, also finishing well over the netminder to draw the game level.
The Steelers would then find the game winning goal during the third period in the 50th minute on the powerplay. A powerplay that certainly upset the Giants coach, Adam Keefe as Long was sent to the box for high-sticking on Petgrave.
Brett Neumann found space in the slot, was found by Petgrave and he ripped one top corner.
There was no more pleasing Adam Keefe when his team was called for a too-many men penalty later in the period – not sure where we have seen a blown too-many men call before?
With Whistle pulled the Steelers threw everything in-front of their net to make sure they went away with the first two points of the weekend.
A goal winning goal earnt Brett Neumann the Man of the Match award and he made a beautiful drive down the middle of the fairway.
We are ofcourse back in action tomorrow night as we take on the Belfast Giants again. 4pm face-off – See you then!
