Steelers stay top with one-goal win

Game 2 of the weekend for the Steelers, coming off the back of a 7-1 home victory on Saturday which took the club to the top of the league.

Steelers start the game in Manchester with the same team as Saturday, meaning that both Davey Phillips and Tomas Pitule are missing and Alex Graham keeps his place.

Tom Perring and Andy Dalton referee the game tonight.

First Period…

End to end first period with the Storm twice taking the lead with the Steelers hitting back quickly.

Even first half of the period with both goalies called into action, however it was the home team, through their captain Cameron Critchlow that took the lead at 9.29

Storm then ran into penalty trouble, first Johnson was called for tripping and then just 44 seconds later Critchlow was sent to the box for goaltender interference after making contact with Matt Greenfield on a short handed breakaway

On the resulting 5 on 3 Powerplay Evan Mosey equalised (assisted Dowd and Petgrave)

More end to end action followed and it looked like the Storm would be taking a one goal advantage in to the break when Cole Carter scored from close range after a scramble in front of Greenfield at 17.31

Just 12 seconds later Martin Latal tied the game, unassisted with a backhand shot (2-2)

Steelers go into the second period on the Powerplay after a late penalty against Dallas Ehrhardt took a slashing minor at 19.26

Second Period …

Steelers converted on that power-play, just 17 seconds in and Brett Neumann set up Daniel Ciampini to score.

The lead didn’t last long with Anthony DeLuca scoring at 22.07 (3-3)

Storm once again took the lead with a strange goal by Scott Simmonds that seemed to deflect past Greenfield in the Steelers goal.

12 Seconds later and the game was tied 4-4, whilst it looked like Martin Latal had scored his 2nd of the night the goal was awarded to Robert Dowd (302)

We go into the final period tied and all to play for.

Third Period …

After goals, goals, goals in the first two sessions there was only one goal to report in the final period.

A game winner and his second in two games for Brandon Connolly at 49.03

Conns converted from close range with assists going to the most impressive Matt Petgrave.

It wasn’t all Steelers as the Storm had three power-play chances in the last 20 minutes, a roughing minor against Sam Jones and a hooking call against Daniel Ciampini and then with just seconds remaining and the Manchester goalie pulled a tripping minor against Matt Petgrave

Steelers kill was outstanding, backed up once again by great goaltending from Matt Greenfield

Final Score: Manchester Storm 4-5 Steelers

With Guildford Flames beating Cardiff Devils 3-0 The Steelers move 1 point clear at the top of the league
