Steelers’ Mitchell on IR as Fox Brings in Tomas Pitule

The Sheffield Steelers commence their training camp this morning as the club holds its annual induction day.

However, head coach Aaron Fox has been dealing with news from North America that forward Mason Mitchell has picked up a lower body injury that will delay his arrival to Sheffield

Fox said “Not the news you like to get a week before camp starts but this can happen.

“Mason called about a week ago and said he got a lower body injury while on ice training. He went to get an MRI and both his Drs and ours after seeing the results agree it’s likely a 6-8 week injury before being able to take any contact.

“He will start year on IR (injury reserve) and rehab at home until he gets closer to be able to train with the team and then fly over”

Fox has moved quickly to ensure that the team will start the season at full strength

“Starting full is very important so we will be bringing in Tomáš Pitule in on a 2 month deal with a team option to stay the whole year.

“He’s a big 2 way Forward who skates extremely well and plays a very responsible game.

“Tomas averaged a point per game in czech 2 in 20-21 so he has proved he can produce offensively as well. He played half the year in Czech Extraliga last year in a checking line role so will be a guy we can count on in those situations too.

I believe he’s a natural centre who can play wing as well and is very excited to be here competing for a full year contract”.
