Steelers lay tracks in Challenge Cup opener PHN's Best Shots of the Game

The Steelers got themselves up and running in the Challenge Cup tonight as they took victory over the visiting Manchester Storm by five goals to two.

Greenfield was once again between the pipes as D Phillips, Schulze, Neumann, Allen and Ciampini made up the starting six.

The Steelers were up and running in the fourth minute as the impressive Matt Petgrave picked up his first of two goals on the night at (4.12). Petgrave with an absolute bomb from the right wing hashmarks after a beautiful move from Ciampini created the space centre ice and laid it off nicely. Scott Allen also picking up an assist on the goal to start his Gordie Howe hattrick.

Totally against the run of the play, the Storm were back level at (7.50) as Jesper Ohrvall found the back of Greenfield’s net with a nice finish.

Adam Raska was next on the scoresheet at (13.12) to put the Steelers ahead, assisted by Connolly and Latal. This time just as the powerplay expired, Connolly found Raska inbetween the hashmarks and another rocket was too much for Lavigne to handle.

The Steelers then lead by two at (18.48) as Scott Allen picked up his goal of the Gordie Howe hat-trick. Neumann with the twist and turns infront of Lavigne’s net and as his shot deflected up off Lavigne it was Allen was there to bat it in. Daniel Ciampini picking up the second assist on the play.

Although lots of action ensued, neither team was able to add to the score line until the 38th minute as Petgrave picked up his second goal of the night at (38.27) from between the hashmarks as he was in the right place at the right time to fire home past Lavigne.

An even one goal apiece period in the last twenty took the game to five-two in the Steelers favour.

Daniel Ciampini finally got his name on the scoresheet courtesy of a few deflections at (41.53) as he skated in from the left wing and fired in on Lavigne and the ricochets were too much and the puck found its way into the back of the net.

Shortly afterwards, the Storm got their second goal of the night at (53.41) as Ryan Barrow and Stephen Johnson went two on one and Barrow finished nicely.

Allen then picked up his fighting element of the Gordie Howe hattrick as he dropped the gloves with Chays Ruddy after being cross-checked in the back. Allen giving a good show but ending pretty quickly.

For his two goals on the night, Petgrave picked up his second Man of the Match award at home and was sent on his second Eddy which ended with a bit of ten pin bowling.

We are back in league action tomorrow night as we travel up North to take on the Dundee Starts, before another two away games against the Clan next Thursday and Panthers on Sunday. It will be good to get back home the following week – See you there!
