SHEFFIELD, U.K. – The Sheffield Steelers were back to winning ways last night when they beat the Fife Flyers 5-1, in a game which Sheffield could have been in double figures if they wanted to put their foot on the gas.
Sheffield Steelers starting goaltender John DeCaro was dropped from the roster, so that Steelers Player/Coach Ryan Finnerty could play his full complement of out skating imports.
Sheffield-born Geoff Woolhouse was given the nod in between the pipes at Ice Sheffield, looking for his third shutout of the season.
The game got off to a fast and frantic start with both teams having chances early on.
It wasn’t until the seventh minute when the first goal came, and that was courtesy of Sheffield skipper Jonathan Phillips, who fired home on a breakaway unassisted, to give Sheffield a 1-0 lead.
Former Newcastle Vipers Player/Coach Danny Stewart almost restored parity for the Scottish outfit when he hit the post at 9:32.
The Steelers pressed and were soon on the score sheet again, Jason Hewitt’s initial shot, left a tasty rebound with Neil Clark being the first to it, and backhanding home at 15:41 making it 2-0.
No further scoring followed in the first period, one in which the hosts dominated and out shot their Scottish counterparts by 13-6.
The Steelers came out firing in the second period and the game was soon put to bed thanks to Mike Ramsay netting his 23rd of the season at 21:13, then Neil Clark fired home another breakaway goal just 41 seconds later to make it 4-0 to the hosts.
The final nail in the visitors coffin came at 28:48 when Jeff Legue fired home a blistering slapshot for his teams fifth of the night and Legue’s 27th of the season.
No further scoring followed in the second period, with Sheffield going into the period break ecstatic with the 5-0 scoreline.
Seventeen shots were shared in the third period and only one found it’s way into the back of the net. Flyer Steven Gunn netted a superbly finished consolation effort for the visitors at 54:42, breaking Geoff Woolhouse’s shutout hopes, one that the Sheffield Born shot stopper thoroughly deserved.
The clock ticked down and Sheffield claimed another valuable two points in their quest to retain the EIHL league title.
The Steelers next face a trio of Scottish teams over the weekend, as they face Braehead away on Friday night, Fife away on Saturday, before returning to the Sheffield Motorpoint Arena to host the Edinburgh Capitals on Sunday.
