Stars win in OT 5-4 in home opener

CEDAR PARK, Texas – The Texas Stars defeated the San Antonio Rampage 5-4 in overtime in front of 6,302 fans on Saturday night at Cedar Park Center. Stars left wing Scott McCulloch scored twice, including the overtime game-winning goal at 3:50 of the extra frame. Forwards Aaron Gagnon, Francis Wathier and Ondrej Roman each scored in the third period to erase separate deficits. Texas goalie Brent Krahn (2-0-0) stopped 26 San Antonio shots for the win. Rampage forward Alexandre Picard scored twice in the defeat. Texas will host Peoria at 5:00 pm on Sunday.
 
San Antonio scored early in the first period with a power-play goal from Alexandre Picard at 3:13.  The Stars responded at 8:51 with a two-on-one goal by Scott McCulloch. Center Travis Morin and right wing Tomas Vincour both added assists on the goal. San Antonio regained a 2-1 lead, scoring their second power-play goal of the night with a redirect from Viktor Tikhonov at 14:27.
 
The Rampage extended its lead to 3-1 early in the second period with a goal from Mathieu Beaudoin at 1:05. The former Star was set up by Brett MacLean and Mikkel Boedker. San Antonio carried a 3-1 lead into the third period.
 
Texas began its comeback in the third period with a power-play goal at 4:22. Left wing Francis Wathier scored a goal with the extra-man advantage to trim the San Antonio lead to 3-2. The Stars struck again just 3:12 later with another power-play goal. Aaron Gagnon poked in a rebound at 7:34 to tie the game 3-3. San Antonio came back to take a 4-3 lead at 12:19 on Alexandre Picard’s second goal of the night. Texas scored again at 11:20 with a goal from left wing Ondrej Roman, tying the game 4-4 and forcing the eventual overtime.
 
In the extra session, Stars forward Scott McCulloch jammed in a rebound on the power play. Center Travis Morin and defenseman Dan Spang set up the game-winning goal at 3:50 of overtime for the 5-4 final.
