Stars stumble in Arizona

In Glendale, Scott Wedgewood made 32 saves and the Arizona Coyotes defeated the Dallas Stars, 3-1, on Sunday.

“I think the guys were a little bit upset about how we managed the third period last night, playing with the lead, and we wanted to learn from our mistakes,” Wedgewood said. “They tied it up, but we didn’t get away from our structure and took the lead back, and then shut it down.”

Roope Hintz was the lone goal scorer for the Stars.

“They coughed up a lead last night,” Dallas head coach Rick Bowness said. “We were putting a lot of pressure on them, and when you put a lot of pressure on them, the other team hopes their goalie makes the big saves at the right time. And [Wedgewood] did.”

Nick Schmaltz hit for a goal and assisted the other two goals in the Coyotes win.

“I thought they were getting frustrated,” Schmaltz said. “They’re a high-offensive team, and when you don’t get a lot of good chances and you make some good saves, it gets a little frustrating.”

Arizona improved to 13-33-4.

The Stars dropped to 27-20-2.

“I was disappointed. We missed too many scoring opportunities in the third period. We could have won that game,” Bowness said. “Missed an open net, we had some Grade As. We just didn’t capitalize.”

Lawson Crouse gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead in the first period.

“It was day and night,” Arizona head coach Andre Tourigny said comparing the Sunday effort to the Saturday loss to the Los Angeles Kings. “Our focus, our attention to details, our calm during this game was really good. I’m really happy about the way the guys responded, the way they prepared, and the way they were focused.”

Clayton Keller scored an empty-net goal late in the third for the 3-1 final.

Jake Oettinger made 24 saves in the Dallas loss.

“We had a lot of one and dones,” the Stars’ Jason Robertson said. “We weren’t getting to the net. And this is hockey, sometimes goalies get hot.”
