CEDAR PARK, Texas – The Texas Stars defeated the Lake Erie Monsters 3-2 on Friday night in front of 4,014 fans at Cedar Park Center. Stars left wing Francis Wathier scored the game-winning goal with 41 seconds remaining in regulation. Texas right wing Colton Sceviour notched his first goal of the season on a penalty shot, tying the game with 3:41 left in the third period. Both goalies carried shutouts into the third period. Texas goalie Brent Krahn (2-1-0) stopped 33 Lake Erie shots for the victory.
Lake Erie goalie Jason Bacashihua (1-2-1) made 31 saves in the defeat. Stars rookie forward Sean Backman scored his first pro goal in the win, as Texas improved to 2-1-0-0 at home this season. The Stars will host Peoria at 7:00 PM on Saturday night.
After two scoreless periods of hockey, Lake Erie’s Mark Olver scored the first goal of the night at 7:13 of the third period, pushing the Monsters in front 1-0. The Stars responded at 12:18 with a goal by forward Sean Backman, tying the game 1-1. Backman’s first pro goal was set up by left wing Luke Gazdic and center Mathieu Tousignant. Lake Erie regained the lead 40 seconds later, forward Greg Mauldin snapped a wrist shot past Brent Krahn for his second goal of the year and a 2-1 Monsters lead.
With 3:41 remaining, Texas was awarded a penalty shot when a Lake Erie defender covered the puck in the Monsters crease. Stars right wing Colton Sceviour beat Jason Bacashihua with a backhand shot for his first goal of the year and a 2-2 hockey game.
Texas left wing Francis Wathier scored his second goal of the season with a wraparound shot at 19:19. Stars forwards Greg Rallo and Aaron Gagnon set up the game-winning goal to defeat the Monsters 3-2.
The Stars will continue a five-game home stand next Saturday with the Peoria Rivermen on October 23rd at 7:00 pm.
