In Dallas, the Stars used a four-goal second period to upend the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night in a 4-3 win.
Pressure from above and below in the standings is mounting on Dallas.
Jake Oettinger made 28 saves in the Stars win.
Ryan Suter hit for a goal in the win.
“A lot of desperation tonight,” Suter said. “We knew that team’s good. They had gotten beat the game before, so we knew they were going to come hard. We were prepared. We were ready.”
Dallas improved to 30-20-3.
Arthur Kaliyev hit a double for the Kings in the loss.
“We lost a 60-minute game in 20 minutes,” Los Angeles assistant coach Trent Yawney said. “It was mostly self-inflicted. We turned the puck over and we took penalties, and they made us pay.”
LA dropped to 29-19-7.
The Kings took a 1-0 lead in the first period off a goal from Phillip Danault.
Dallas’ Luke Glendening scored with 43 seconds gone in the middle frame for the 1-1 tie.
Kaliyev scored his pair for 3-1 LA lead in the second.
“The second period is what killed us in this game,” Kaliyev said. “We sat back, made a lot of turnovers, and then we didn’t get our forecheck. It cost us in the second period badly.”
Jason Robertson and Suter knotted the game, 3-3.
“Even though we were down 3-1, we were really confident in the way we were playing,” Stars coach Rick Bowness said. “We were controlling play and getting tons of chances. We just had to stay with the program. Play the right way, keep doing those things, and we got rewarded today.”
Suter tied it at 19:01 and Alexander Radulov put the Stars up, 4-3, at 19:44.
“I think the second period we were playing well, but we got a couple of bad breaks where they went and they scored, and we fall [down] by two goals,” Radulov said. “We’re a good team, and if we put up the good work, we’re still going to be there. We get the one, the fans get pumped, and everybody on the bench was kind of going for it, and we get another one.”
Cal Petersen made 38 saves in the Kings loss.
“It was the second period where a lot of their momentum came off of both the power play and turnovers,” Yawney said. “That allows their [defense] to get involved, and we spent a lot more time in our zone. When that happens, shift length gets longer. With the penalties, we didn’t get enough guys in the game, so there’s guys sitting. You’re losing momentum all the time. If we could get out of that period tied, it would be a 20-minute game, and then anything can happen.”
