In Detroit, Jason Robertson scored for the Stars with 63 seconds left in the third period to force extra time with the Red Wings.
Roope Hintz scored off the power play at 2:51 into the extra session for a 5-4 win for Dallas on Friday night.
“It wasn’t one of my fastest shots, but it got over the line, so I’ll take it,” Hintz said.
Detroit fell to 18-17-6.
“We’ve got to find a way to finish games like that, especially at home,” the Red Wings’ Dylan Larkin said.
Esa Lindell also scored for the Stars.
“We’re trying to win games 2-1 or 3-2, because we’re not a team built to win 5-4,” Stars head coach Rick Bowness said. “We will happily take five goals every night, but we can’t keep giving up four.”
Dallas improved to 20-16-2.
Ryan Suter and Joel Kiviranta also scored for Dallas.
“I would like to say I saw that tiny spot and aimed for it,” Kiviranta said. “It is just nice to get a goal and help win a game.”
Braden Holtby made 24 saves in the Dallas win.
“I’m really proud of the guys for this one,” Bowness said. “They went ahead on a fluky power-play goal in the third, but we fought back. We needed all 60 minutes to tie it, but we got there and won it in overtime.”
Robby Fabbri, Pius Suter, and Tyler Bertuzzi added markers for the Red Wings.
“A couple of their guys were trying to tag up for a delayed offside, so I got some speed and beat a couple of guys,” Larkin said. “It opened up in the middle, and I kind of flipped it at the net and got lucky when it went in.”
Alex Nedeljkovic made 27 saves in the Detroit loss.
“We played too well not to win that game tonight,” Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill said. “We did some very good things, but we made two mental mistakes at the end.”
