Stars outshine Lightning in Game 1 Khudobin stymies Lightning in third period

In Edmonton, it was not for lacking trying that the Tampa Bay Lightning lost Game 1 to the Dallas Stars.

It had everything to do with Anton Khudobin who made 22 saves in the third period when the Bolts were looking to get back in the game.

“It’s a team effort, it’s a team performance,” Khudobin said. “I made a couple good saves, I would say, but at the same time, we played together, we played as a team, it’s a team sport.”

Khudobin  made a total of 35 saves in the game.

The only goal he yielded was a carom off the leg of Yanni Gourde in the first period that tied the game up at 1-1.

“I wasn’t thinking anything else [but] focusing on the puck,” Khudobin said. “They did a heck of a job trying to stay in front of me and trying to screen me. I didn’t think about anything else, just to stop the pucks.”

Joel Hanley staked Dallas to a 1-0 lead i the first period with his first career NHL goal.

Jamie Oleksiak scored just past the midway point of the second period for a 2-1 Stars lead.”Been a few days here, we got some rest,” Dallas’ Jamie Benn said. “I thought we had a good start to the game, they got a lucky one but it didn’t faze us and we just kept playing our game.”

Joel Kiviranta potted insurance for Dallas with 28 seconds left in the middle frame.

“They’re a good team, they’re going to get their chances,” Benn said. “[Khudobin] made a lot of great saves there in the third period, kept us in it, and we found a way to win.”

Jason Dickinson sealed the game with an empty net marker late in the third period.

The Dallas defense had two goals and five points on the night.

“They’re a big part of our group, a big part of our offense,” Benn said. “We’ve got a lot of good players back there so we try to use them a little more.”
