DALLAS – Tyler Seguin scored with 3:29 lft in the third f]period to get the Stars tied, 3-3, with the visiting Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday night, and force extra time.
Matt Duchene cored with less than a minute gone in the extra session for a 4-3 win for Dallas.
“I’m probably, minutes-wise, playing as little as I’ve played in my career (averaging 16:46 per game), because we can just roll the lines over,” Duchene said. “But your quality of the minutes is so high, it feels like you’re playing more. It’s great, and you’re fresh every shift. Over the course of 60 minutes, we just wear you down because we have so much skill and hard work, and we have chemistry on the lines too, which is great.”
Dallas improved to 11-3-1.
Jake Oettinger made 23 saves to get the victory.
“Those are the games that kind of tell you about your group and how they react to situations like that,” Dallas coach Peter DeBoer said. “We didn’t sag. We hopped over the boards and immediately got back on our toes and started to work for the next offensive play. I liked our response. You’re going to go through 82 games, you’re going to have situations like that where you blow leads or the other team is opportunistic. You have to handle it and find a way to get points, and we did that.”
Arizona dropped to 7-6-2.
The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead at 5:33 of the first period on a strike by Clayton Keller.
“I think we need to become comfortable in the uncomfortable,” Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. “The NHL’s a good league. An opponent at any moment at any game will have momentum, they will push. We do it, they will do to us, that will happen. We need to be comfortable and in control and poised in those situations.”
Dallas replied with a pair goals to take a 2-1 lead.
“I’m screaming for it, so I’m hoping that he [finds me],” Seguin said of his breakaway goal. “I was actually thinking about it today. I’ve had some breakaways lately and haven’t scored on my last six or seven of them, and I’ve been shooting every one. It was in my subconscious to make a move and happy it went in.”
Esa Lindell scored at 17:52 of the first to tie the game, 1-1.
Roope Hintz hit for a marker midway through the second period for the 2-1 lead.
Arizona responded with a pair of goals of their own to reclaim the lad 3-2.
Jason Zucker tied the game off a power play goal, 2-2, at 12:11 of the third.
Lawson Crouse scored off a breakaway at 14:26 to give the Coyotes a a 3-2 lead they were unable to protect.
“We felt that we’d battled all game, and it’s been a theme of our group to not give up,” Crouse said. “It’s obviously disappointing that we couldn’t come away with the win, but we did our best. We fought right to the end. Proud of our group.”
Karel Vejmelka made 32 saves in the loss.
“We did a good pre-scout this morning, and we felt that one area that we could expose them was in the middle of the ice, and we tried to do our best on that. They did a good job on the first penalty kill they had, and we were able to get set on that last one there,” Crouse said. “I got a couple of good shots off, and that kind of dragged all their attention to the middle. Obviously [Maccelli]’s been making those plays all year, and [Zucker] has an incredible one-timer. It was a big goal for us at the moment.”
