Stars blow early lead, down Sens, 4-3, in OT

In Dallas, the Stars blew a 2-0 lead, as is customary in the NHL this season, and needed to rally with a late goal to force extra time on Thursday with the Ottawa Senators.

Tyler Seguin hit for the winner in the extra session for a 4-3 win.

“It’s a funny game,” Seguin said. “I feel like I’m playing well the last couple games, a lot of chances, no finish. Tonight, I thought I [stunk] and scored the overtime winner. Definitely felt good.”

Nils Lundkvist‘s third period goal in the 15th minute, forced the extra session with a 3-3 tie.

“It wasn’t our best,” Seguin admitted. “Like I said, it wasn’t my best. We just found a way to win tonight.”

Jake Oettinger made 28 saves in the Stars win.

Dallas improved to 15-7-5.

“Down 2-0 early, and not a couple of great goals [against], but stayed with it and battled,” Senators coach D.J. Smith said. “I thought we played a really good game. To lose that way in overtime, it hurts, but in saying that, that’s a really good team and we had all kinds of opportunities to win.”

Miro Heiskanen scored twice in the first period for the early, 2-0, lead.

“Miro’s adding layers to his game,” DeBoer said. “We’re asking an awful lot of him: defend, score, play 28 minutes, do everything. I’m a little worried about wearing him out, overusing him, asking too much of him, because it’s a long season. But he’s a great player and he can do just about anything out there.”

In the middle frame, Ottawa’s Derick Brassard and Ben Chabot scored to get the game even at 2-2.

“We bounced back right away and we answered the bell,” Chabot said. “I mean, it could’ve easily gone the other way. … Everybody stepped up their game and we came right back in the game and we made it a game.”

Ottawa dropped to 10-14-2.

The bounce back continued in the third when Travis Hamonic scored with 87 seconds gone in the frame for a 3-2 lead to the Sens.

“The first six or seven minutes weren’t ideal for us,” Hamonic said. “But to get down 2-0 in a really hard building to play in against one of the better teams in the League, I thought we showed a lot of resilience to battle back and get ourselves back in the game, for the most part. I think we carried some of the game.”

Anton Forsberg made 28 saves in the loss.
