WINDSOR, ON. The Spitfires were on the right side of another OT decision for the second game in a row. This time it was Jacob Maillet with the OT winner on a breakaway scoring his 21st of the season.
In the first period, it took the Spitfires just under three minutes to open the scoring. Peer got the puck and passed it to Morneau who shot it and the rebound bounced to Smith in front of the net who cashed in on his 21st of the season. That would be the lone goal of the period as the Spitfires held a 11-5 shot advantage.
In the second period, some fisticuffs ensued as Dionicio dropped the mitts with MacDonell and then Holmes took exception to a missed interference call on Abraham and dropped Zidlicky in a fight. Just under three waters through the period, the Steelheads would score on the powerplay to tie the game at 1. Late in the frame, the Spitfires would respond with a powerplay goal of their own. Maillet in the corner got the puck back to the point to Cristoforo, he passed to Renwick who unleashed a slap-shot top shelf for his 12th of the season. The Spitfires had a 19-16 shot advantage through the 2nd period.
In the third period, the Steelheads would find the equalizer just over 5 minutes into the frame. Some anxious minutes as Renwick made a goal-line save to keep it tied late in the period. 60 minutes couldn’t solve anything and we were off to overtime.
In the overtime period, a turnover by the Steelheads at the redline turned into a breakaway for Maillet who sped up the ice and buried his 21st five hole to give the Spitfires a 3-2 win.
It was the Spitfires 9th win in a row.
The Spitfires are back in action on the road on Family Day February 20th when they travel to London to take on the Knights. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:05pm.
