WINDSOR, ON. – The Spitfires won a crucial game in Windsor on Wednesday evening taking top spot in the Western Division as they beat Saginaw 5-2.

The Spitfires took flight in the first period with newcomer Bret Harrison scoring the games opening goal, left alone in the slot, he ripped one past the netminder for his 17th of the season and 1st as a Spitfire. Maggio and Miedema had assists on the goal. That was the lone goal of the period. The Spirit led in shots 9-5 after 20 minutes of play.
In the second period, the Spitfires add another goal from rookie Liam Greentree who sniped his 11th of the season. Miedema and Jodoin had assists on the goal. The Spirit would rally back with a pair of goals to tie the game at 2 just over midway through the period. That would be all the scoring in the frame as the Spirit held on to a 19-11 shot advantage.
In the third period, the Spitfires game winning goal came from a beautiful solo effort from Oliver Peer who dipsy-doodled around the Saginaw defender and tucked in his 14th of the campaign. The highlight reel goals was the OHL’s play of the night! Just over midway through the third, Spitfires rookie AJ Spellacy scored his 5th from a sharp angle to give the Spitfires a 4-2 lead. The Spirit would pull their netminder with 4:45 to play in the frame. The Spirit hemmed in the Spitfires as they had a 6 on 5 advantage but it was the Joey Costanzo show as he made several key saves down the stretch and throughout the game. The Spitfires would add an empty net goal from Maggio to make it 5-2 (third times a charm; after 2 offside calls and 2 disallowed goals). The Spitfires would hold on for the last 45 seconds and take home the 2 points.
The Spitfires now sit a-top of the Western Division with 48 points in 34 games.
The Spitfires are back in action on Friday night when they head to Sarnia for a matchup with the Sting. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm
