WINDSOR, ON. – The Windsor Spitfires climbed back into the game with two goals late in the third period to steal away a two point victory on home ice Thursday evening.
In the first period, the Petes struck first just over a minute into the game. It was J.R Avon’s 8th of the season. The Spitfires would respond with 1:08 to play in the first period. A 3 on 1 developed for the Spitfires. Peer got the puck to Smith who passed it back door to Christopoulos who buried it for his 12th of the season. The Spitfires led in shots 15-7 after the period.
In the second period, the Petes would restore their one goal lead as Lardis used his speed and went in to score his 9th of the season. The Petes held a 2-1 lead heading into the third period.
In the third period, the Spitfires offense came alive when they needed it. Maillet got the puck back to the point to Renwick, he shot the puck and Abraham in front of the net deflected it into the goal to tie the game 2-2. With just under 5 minutes to play the Spitfires offence was buzzing in the Petes zone. Sobolev got the puck to Morneau who found Maggio at the top of the circle and he ripped his 11th of the season for the games winning goal. The Spitfires would shut down the Petes offence and hold on for the 3-2 win.
The Spitfires are back in action on Saturday when the London Knights come to town. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.
