Special teams play big factor as Islanders defeat Rangers 4-2

NY Islanders logo NEW YORK (NY) -After recording 25 shots or less in five of their last six games, the New York Rangers finally broke through and recorded 38 shots. The only problem was they were facing a red-hot Jaroslav Halak, who stopped 36 of them, 16 coming in the first period.

Henrik Lundvist on the other side stopped 28 of 32 shots for his eighth loss of the year.

The New York Islanders have now received a point in each of their last five games, going 4-0-1.

Islanders went 1-for-2 on the power play while the Rangers went 0-for-6 (with two of them coming with less than two minutes in the game). They had a double minor in the first where they recorded 10 shots, though none of them would get through Halak.

Jimmy Vesey and Marc Staal recored the Rangers goals while Scott Mayfield, Jason Chimera, Andrew Ladd and John Tavares would all get on the board for the Isles.

The Rangers, already without forwards Pavel Buchnevich and Mika Zibanejad, lost two more forwards in Rick Nash and Matt Puempel Tuesday night when they left the game early.

Talk of the flu was spreading in the Islanders locker room and defensemen Johnny Boychuk fell victim as he would miss the game.

The Rangers next game will be in Winnipeg against the rookie phenom Patrik Laine and the Jets on December 8th at 8pm.

The Islanders will host the St. Louis Blues on Thursday at 7pm.
