Sorokin, Islanders shut out Flyers, 4-0 Islanders keep pace with Florida, ahead of Pittsburgh

In Elmont, Ilya Sorokin made 27 saves  and the Islanders shut the Philadelphia Flyers, 4-0 on Saturday.“Ilya did a really good job, especially early,” Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson said. “They had a couple (scoring chances) when we were still trying to get to our game a little bit.”

The win helped the Isles keep pace in the wild card race in the Eastern Conference.

New York is tied with the Florida Panthers for the first spot, they both lead the Pittsburgh Penguins by a single point.

“We know we have to win,” New York coach Lane Lambert said. “We feel like if we take care of our business then we’ll be in a good spot. We know the result.”

Scott Mayfield scored in the first period to give the Isles a 1-0 lead.

“We knew they were going to come out hard in the first, and they did,” New York’s Bo Horvat said. “I thought we weathered that pretty [well and] our game just kind of took off from there. As soon as we got that first one it just kind of kept going.”

Brock Nelson scored at 7:20 of the middle frame to push the lead to 2-0.

“[Sebastian Aho] made a good play on the 1-on-1 to break it up, and then I just tried to get my head up, and [Nelson] does a good job of finding space,” the Isles Noah Dobson said. “You give him that much time, he’s usually automatic from there. So it’s a big goal and he did a great job finishing.”

Samuel Bolduc scored at 15:06 of the second to extend the advantage to 3-0.

“He put a couple pucks to the net,” Lambert said. “He’s got [the] ability to do that. It’s a very quick wrist shot, I guess you can say, with a lot of velocity to it, so it’s one of the things that he’s very good at.”

Hudson Fasching scored with less than two minutes left on the game clock for the 4-0 final.

Carter Hart got the start for the Flyers, and yielded three goals while making 15 saves before getting the hook in the second intermission.

Felix Sandstrom made two saves in a mop up role.
