Soderberg retires after 9 seasons in NHL

Carl Soderberg announced his retirement as an NHL player on Thursday.

Selected by the St. Louis Blues in the second round (No. 49) of the 2004 NHL Draft, the 37-year-old center had 297 points (110 goals, 187 assists) in 597 games over nine seasons with the Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, Arizona Coyotes and Chicago Blackhawks, and 14 points (three goals, 11 assists) in 45 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

He was recognized as being a strong defensive performer and playmaker despite being nearly blind in his left eye.

Soderberg had his two best offensive seasons as a member of the Avalanche; he scored an NHL career-high 23 goals for Colorado in 2018-19 and a League career-high 51 points (12 goals, 39 assists) in 2015-16.

He last played in the NHL in 2020-21 (11 games with the Avalanche). He played the past two seasons with Malmo of the Swedish Hockey League in his homeland.
