Brendan Smith signed a two-year, $2.2 million contract with the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday. It has an average annual value of $1.1 million.
The 33-year-old defenseman had eight points (four goals, four assists) in 45 regular-season games and four points (one goal, three assists) in 14 Stanley Cup Playoff games for the Carolina Hurricanes last season.

Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (No. 27) of the 2007 NHL Draft, Smith has 118 points (33 goals, 85 assists in 571 regular-season games for the Hurricanes, Rangers and Red Wings, and 14 points (three goals, 11 assists) in 56 playoff games.
The Devils also acquired forward Erik Haula in a trade with the Boston Bruins on Wednesday for forward Pavel Zacha.
