BASINGSTOKE UK: Bison cageman Dean Skinns recorded this third shut-out of the season and the tenth of his Bison career, as he made 12 saves in the Herd’s 6-0 win at Milton Keynes Thunder.
This is a new club record for Basingstoke and also took the Herd’s perfect start to their league campaign to nine games.
They now have the club record of 12 wins in their sights, which was achieved by Basingstoke’s first league championships winning back in 1992/93.
The victory over the Thunder saw both Ivan Antonov and Roman Malinik score shorthanded markers. Malinik also added an even handed strike, while Tomas Karpov netted twice and Dan Scott – the club’s leading scoring defenseman got the other.
The previous night, the Bison lost 3-1 to the Swindon Wildcats on home ice, in a National Cup group game and they now have a win all their remaining games in the competiton to make sure of a place in the last eight.
Once again for both games, the Herd were minus Stuart Mogg, Paul Petts, Josh Smith, Oscar Evans and Sam Brooks, but head coach Doug Sheppard was not using this as an excuse.
“I think the players enjoy the extra ice time from the short bench. Against Swindon we were poor in the first period and that cost us. In MK we played a solid 60 minutes and got the result which showed the character of the team,” said Sheppard.
This weekend, the Bison start with an Autumn Trophy game on the road at the Peterborough Phantoms, with both sides looking to secure the number one spot in the group and theerfore be top seeds for the semi-finals.
On Sunday, the Herd are back on home ice with the London Raiders making their final regular season visit. When last in town Tom Davis had to dress and go in goal after lone netminder Euan King was injury.
King this week left the Raiders and joined the Phantoms, so could well face Bison on Saturday and not Sunday as was expected at the begining of the week.
