Just a day after a devastating last minute loss to the league leading Ottawa 67’s, the Petes put Thursday night behind them and traveled to Kingston to take on the Frontenacs. The Leon’s Centre has not been kind to the Petes this season, and the Maroon and White were looking for their first win in Kingston this season heading into the game. Kingston entered the game coming off of a tough loss to the last place Niagara IceDogs, and the Petes would try to use that to their advantage to get out of their own funk.
The Petes came out strong from the drop of the puck. It was easy to see that they were determined to get on the board early and fed off of the heartbreak from last night’s game to do so. Seven minutes into the game, Avery Hayes forced a short handed turnover at the Kingston blue line resulting in a two on one for the Petes. Hayes looked off Frontenacs goalie Ivan Zhigalov and fed Tucker Robertson for a perfectly placed one-timer to give the Petes a 1-0 lead. Coming off of a 40 save performance Thursday night, Michael Simpson continued his strong play through the first period, stopping all seven of Kingston’s shots to hold Peterborough’s 1-0 lead heading into the break. Peterborough would also lead in shots 10-7 after the 20 minutes.
The second period was all goaltending, with both Simpson and Zhigalov making multiple saves to keep each team off the board. Simpson had multiple big saves off of turnovers to hold the Petes lead and keep the game 1-0 heading into the third. Peterborough would stay in control of shots 21-15.
The third period would see the Petes finally get their first powerplay of the game. They would not pass up the opportunity with the extra man. Just seconds into the powerplay, Chase Stillman picked up a rebound and fired the puck past Zhigalov to extend the Petes lead to 2-0. The goal was Stillman’s 16th of the season and would give Peterborough some confidence heading into the final half of the third. There would be quite a bit of action in the final 10 mins as the Petes would kill off a five minute major to hold the lead. Michael Simpson remained perfect and Connor Lockhart added an empty netter to give the Petes their first win in Kingston this season with a score of 3-0.
Michael Simpson led the way for the Petes, stopping all 22 shots faced for his 20th win and league leading 4th shutout of the season. Tucker Robertson, Chase Stillman, and Connor Lockhart each scored, while Avery Hayes, Jonathan Melee, and Gavin White all picked up an assist.
