Simpson Records Shutout, Stillman Scores First of the Year as Petes Beat Colts 5-0

On Saturday, October 8th the Petes traveled to Sadlon Arena to take on the Barrie Colts in their first away game of the season. Coming off of their first loss of the season, the Petes were looking to bounce back and re-enter the win column.

The night started off with a beautiful ceremony honouring the late Dale Hawerchuk. A Hockey Hall of Famer, Hawerchuk served as head coach of the Colts for 10 years from 2010-2020.

When asked what it meant to be included in the ceremony, Petes General Manager Michael Oke said, “On behalf of the Petes, I’d like to thank Howie Campbell and the Barrie Colts for including our organization in tonight’s tremendous ceremony recognizing Dale Hawerchuk’s life and career. Dale’s impact and legacy will be felt for years to come, and it was an honour to witness the hockey community come together in Barrie to pay tribute.”

The game started off strong, with both teams getting chances early. That all changed at the 12:22 mark of the first period, when Tucker Robertson scored his second of the year on a backhander. Connor Lockhart added an assist to keep his point-streak alive at four games. After a back and forth first period, it looked like the Colts had tied the game at 1-1, but the play was reviewed and deemed to be offside. That seemed to spark the Petes as Jack Van Volsen would bury a one-timer with 27 seconds on the clock to give the Petes a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission. Sahil Panwar picked up an assist on the goal for his first point as a Pete.

Buzzing off of the energy from the late goal in the first, it would take only two minutes for Chase Stillman to put one by Anson Thornton to make it 3-0 Petes. Just three minutes later, Tucker Robertson would score his second of the game on a breakaway to make it 4-0. The game would stay that way for the remainder of the second period.

It was a rough, penalty filled third period, but that wouldn’t stop the Petes. Ten minutes into the frame, Connor Lockhart scored his second goal of the year on an outstanding shot to make it 5-0. That goal would prove to be too much for Barrie, as that’s how the game would end.

Michael Simpson was unbeatable in the Petes net, stopping all 26 shots that he faced for his second career shutout.

The Petes are back on the road next Thursday when they travel to North Bay to take on the Battalion. You can catch the game live on YourTV Peterborough.
