Simmonds’ hat trick helps Flyers beat San Jose, 5-3

Wayne Simmondswas too much for the San Jose Sharks Wednesday night as he struck three times in a 5-3 win for the Philadelphia Flyers.

Two of the strikes came on the power play.

“We didn’t start working on our power play until the end of camp,” Simmonds said. “I think our focus was to get our legs going and make sure we had our 5-on-5 structure down and everything like that. With our power play, both units this year, it’s only a matter of time. We kept working on it and we’ll continue to work on it. Today was a pretty good showing.”

Brian Elliott made 32 saves to get his win as a Flyer goalie.

Claude Giroux and Jordan Wealalso scored for the Flyers.

Kevin Labanc struck for two goals and Logan Coutureadded a marker.

Leblanc was also whistled three times for penalties and each ended with a Flyers goal.

“I’ve got to be more disciplined. That shouldn’t have happened, and they scored off them, so I’ve got to be a little more disciplined and watch where I put my stick,” Labanc said.
