The chase for 700 wins shifts to another game, as the Owen Sound Attack drop their annual Hockey Fights Cancer charity game 4-1 Saturday night to the visiting London Knights.
It was perfect start for the Attack, as they were able to get on the board just three minutes into the game, when Madden Steen banged home a loose puck from a bad angle, while on the penalty kill. The shorthanded marker was Steen’s first career OHL goal, though he scored in last season’s playoffs, the career goals only count during the regular season.
That was the lone bright spot for Owen Sound during Saturday nights action, as the Knights were the more aggressive team throughout the opening period, and were rewarded around the seven minute mark, when Jackson Edward evened the score. It was then a pair of Max McCue goals, with the second coming shorthanded, that staked the visitors to a 3-1 lead after the fist period.
Though the energy was low on the ice, the fans inside the sell-out Bayshore did their best to ignite some energy into the Bears for a come back. The home side was able to build off the fans energy, as the Attack heavily tilted the ice during the second period, but a strong Knights defence, along with goalie Brett Brochu kept Owen Sound off the score board.
The game was sealed with about six minutes left on the clock, as London tallied another to increase their lead to 4-1, and rode their shutdown defence till the final buzzer.
Though on the ice was not the desired result, off-ice activities were a success, as fans enjoyed the second intermission Chuck-A-Puck, along with a silent auction, as funds and awareness were raised for the Canadian Cancer Society. The specialty jersey’s that the Attack wore for the game, will be the final items gone, as fans have until Sunday evening at 6pm to bid on their favourite players game worn/issued Hockey Fights Cancer jersey. The DASH Auction site can be accessed here.
