Shorthanded 67’s fall to Petes

With illness, injury, and suspensions removing a number of Ottawa 67’s from the lineup, the Barber Poles threw everything they had at the Peterborough Petes, but fell just short in the final night of their five-game road swing.

In the absence of Vinzenz Rohrer, Jack Beck, Derek Smyth, Jack Dever, and Steve Laforme, Cam Tolnai scored in the first period, and Brady Stonehouse made it a one-goal game late, but the Petes edged Ottawa by a final score of 3-2, this night. Collin MacKenzie made 31 saves in goal, despite suffering the first loss of his OHL career.

Tommy Purdeller opened the scoring for the Petes, on a breakaway 7:19 in, but the 67’s found the answering marker just 53 seconds into the middle period.

On the powerplay, Luca Pinelli found Tolnai at the left wing circle, and the OA forward let go a wrist shot that beat Michael Simpson clean on the blocker side, tying the game 1-1.

The Petes retook their lead seven minutes alter, however, on a man advantage of their own. It was J.R. Avon putting the puck past MacKenzie, making it 2-1 for the home team, and Brian Zanetti potted his own rebound with less than six minutes to go in the frame.

Peterborough appeared to take a 4-1 lead early in the third, but the goal was waved off due to an offside.

Ottawa had chances to bring the score back to even, and on another powerplay with 30 seconds to play, Stonehouse banged home the rebound of a Tyler Boucher shot to cut the lead to 3-2.

Despite a furious sequence at the buzzer, the Barber Poles narrowly missed finding the equalizer, and were dealt their third straight defeat.

Ottawa will look to snap their skid at home tomorrow afternoon, with a 2:00pm matchup against the Sudbury Wolves.

Game Notes:

  • Cam Tolnai’s 11th of the season is a new career high for him.
  • Brady Stonehouse’s 12th ties him with Luca Pinelli for the team lead.
  • The 67’s are the first team in the OHL to hit 100 goals, this season, after scoring just 199 last year.
