SAN JOSE CA – The Winnipeg Jets are heading home with yet another tough game in which they suffered another loss, the fourth loss in a row, for a club that has come away with one point in its last four games. Today’s game ended a Pacific Division swing that saw them lose 5-2 against the San Jose Sharks.
Monday’s game saw the Sharks get out to a commanding four-goal lead and saw them score a shorthanded goal , power play goal , two even strength goals and an empty net
goal.
Things started rough as the Jets started out flying but could not find the back of the net , then on the power play Dustin Byfuglien tried to keep a puck in and was beat by the Sharks Joel Ward who streaked down the wall and blasted one glove side past Michael Hutchinson for his fourth of the season.
“I looked up and nobody was there, went to play the puck, and turned around and just saw a big white jersey in front of me,” Ward said. “It was a hockey play. It was a good hit. I tried to get the puck out obviously, and next thing I knew I was on my back and heard the horn go off. I wasn’t too sure what happened after that.”
The goal blunted the Jets’ speed and fire.
“They came out ready to play,” Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer said of the Jets’ quick start. “The first five minutes [Jones] made some big saves, allowed us to kind of get our legs going. And then I thought we really started to play. I really liked our game from then on. It’s just a commitment to be the harder team. This is a league where there’s so much parity that if you’re not the more committed team or at least as committed as the other team you’re not going to win.”
Blake Wheeler had a chance to tie things up but rang one off the post.
“We just gave up a little too much in the second period,” Wheeler said. “If we could have gotten one then we would have tied it up and it would have been a different game. We were trying to do too much out there. When things aren’t going your way, sometimes you just try to do a little too much and it ends up costing you the game.”
Timo Meier scored his second of the season after the Jets Mark Stuart delivered a big hit and was caught out of position and the Sharks capitalized on the odd man rush to make it 2-0.
Brent Burns added his 18th on the power play after his shot bounced off Hutchinson’s skate after going wide and into the net.
Chris Tierney scored his fourth making it 4-0 hallway through the third.
Josh Morrisey broke the Martin Jones goose egg late scoring his second of the year , Mark Sheifele added his 20th with twenty seconds left before big Joe Thornton added his 3rd into an empty net making it 5-2 Sharks.
