SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Sharks will advance to round two of the Western Conference Playoffs, as they swept the Anaheim Ducks in four straight games, with a final score of 2-1 in game four.
The Sharks led much of the game, due to an early goal off the stick of Marcus Sorensen 5:43 into the first period. He caught his own rebound in front of the net, and tipped the puck over a sprawled John Gibson, despite Ryan Getzlaf and another defenseman that tried to assist in blocking the net.
Both teams worked the puck to the net, throughout the rest of the first and all of the second period, but Martin Jones and Gibson were relentless.
Early in the third period, Rickard Rakell thought he had scored, but the Sharks bench successfully protested the goal, as Getzlaf was off-sides as he brought the puck across the blue line. The officials quickly ruled no goal.
The Ducks tied the game 7:53 into the third period, when Ryan Kesler passed the puck from behind the net to Andrew Cogliano, who redirected through Jone’s five-hole. But only 76 seconds later, the Sharks took back the lead. Tomas Hertl sent a slapshot from the circle that beat Gibson. Marc-Edouard Vlasic was credited with the assist on the goal.
The Ducks pulled their goalie with just over a minute remaining, but just couldn’t find an opening.
The Sharks will face the Las Vegas Golden Knights for the next round. The Golden Knights swept the Los Angeles Kings in four games last night.
