WORCESTER, Mass – With some desperation on the part of the Sharks the third game in this first round series with the Worfpack became a game of nerves.
Neither team was particularly willing to give an inch and each traded goals in the first two periods. Defenseman Corey Potter picked up a power play marker for Hartford and Worcester came back with just under two minutes to go in the opening frame on a goal from center Tom Cavanagh.
Dale Weise gave the ‘Pack another lead early in the second but Worcester was gain able to beat Matt Zaba to knot the score. Ryan Vesce got his first of the series just 1:25 after the Hartford lead.
Thomas Greiss started in net for the Sharks and was sharp all through regulation and the first overtime session. He stopped 34 of 36 shots through 80 minutes of hockey. Meanwhile Zaba was equally tough again in net in stopping 41 of 43 shots in the same time line.
The ineffectiveness of both teams on the power play came through in this contest as the Sharks were scoreless in five chances through the first overtime session and the Wolfpack were only one for seven including Potter’s first period goal.
But it was Vesce who tuned out to be the hero of the evening as he picked up his second of the game and the series at 1:07 of the second overtime. In doing so, he beat Zaba and gave the Sharks their first win of the series.
Hartford will now look to get back in the win column to restore their two-game advantage.
