Sharks rally past Detroit for 6-5 win in OT Detroit blows 4-0 and 5-4 leads in loss

In Detroit, the visiting San Jose Sharks rallied from a 4-0 deficit to the Red Wings, and then rallied again with a later goal from Tomas Hertl to force extra time on Thursday.

Mikael Granlund then hit for the game-winner with 37 seconds gone in the extra session for a 6-5 to San Jose.

The middle frame was wild contest with the Red Wings taking a 4-0 lead in the frame, but San Jose responded with four of their own to the game, 4-4 after 40 minutes.

“We played 27 great minutes,” said San Jose forward Tomas Hertl. “We had some bad breaks to get down 4-0, but we never quit, and lately that’s been important for us.”

The Sharks improved to 8-17-2.

Mackenzie Blackwood surrendered the four goals to the Red Wings in the second period, he made 16 saves before getting the hook.

Kaapo Kahkonen made 10 saves in relief.

All of the second period scoring occurred in the back half of the frame with Detroit taking a 1-0 lead on a by Klim Kostin at 9:05.

Detroit then rattled off three goals in 49 seconds starting at 12:51 of the period on a strike by Michael Rasmussen for a 2-0 lead, and then 13 seconds later for a double and 3-0 advantage to the Red Wings.

Luaus Raymond then finished the outburst at 13:40, ballooning the lead to 4-0,.

“We weren’t satisfied with our first period, but it seemed like we came out with good momentum and got the 4-0 lead,” Detroit forward David Perron said. “Then we give it away. That’s so frustrating and disappointing.”

Following the fourth goal, the Sharks were hit with a minor penalty, Marc-Edouard Vlasic was whistled for a minor and the Sharks scored two shorthanded goals off the penalty time.

Fabian Zetterlund  and Hertl were the strikers on the shorthanded goals, to make it 4-2 to Detroit.

“[Vlasic’s] penalty was great — it turned the whole game around,” Hertl said.

The Red Wings dropped to 14-7-4.

Nico Sturm  then hit for a double to tie the game, 4-4, for San Jose.

He scored 12 seconds after the penalty expired to get the Sharks within 4-3, then tid the match on a goal with 23 seconds left on the second period clock.

“We’re up four goals and going to the power play, and we basically give up three goals on one power play,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “That’s just being lazy and casual away from the puck.

“That’s cheating hockey, not winning hockey.”

Dylan Larkin scored in the third period to reclaim the lead for the Red Wings at 5-4 the goal came at 13:20 of the frame.

Hertl’s double then tied with less than two minutes left in regulation.

Ville Husso made 30 saves in the loss.
