Sharks rally past Coyotes

It all went south for the Arizona Coyotes after they took a 2-0 lead Saturday night over the San Jose Sharks in Glendale.

The Sharks reeled off four unanswered goals in a 4-2 road win.

Logan Couture struck twice for San Jose who improved to 15-12-1.

“We’re getting there,” Couture said. “To dig out of that early hole we put ourselves in takes a lot. We’re playing some good hockey, and that was the goal.”

Martin Jones made 21 saves for the victory.

Derek Stepan and Nick Schmaltz scored for the Coyotes.

“San Jose is a veteran team. They’ve been in tough games before and down 2-0 they weren’t going to panic, and they didn’t,” Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said.

The Coyotes had a chance in the third period with three straight power plays but could not convert.

“They’re the No. 1 penalty killer and it’s for a reason; they’re good,” Coyotes center Derek Stepan said. “But I keep going back to the word execution. Down a goal there in the third period, we have to execute.”

Timo Meier and Dylan Gambrell added goals for the Sharks.

“The way we started, it could have been 4-0, 5-0, but I thought we settled down and got to our game,” Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer said. “I think the next 50 minutes were probably some of the best hockey we’ve played this year.”

Antti Raanta made 26 saves in the loss.

“When teams start coming at us, we start to kind of look around to see what’s going on, instead of embracing it and attacking it,” Coyotes head coach Rick Tocchet said. “When teams have the momentum against [us], I want them to attack. I don’t want everybody to stand around like, ‘Oh no, where do I go?’ Because for seven or eight minutes, we knew where to go.”
