Sharks rally from early deficit for 5-4 OT win over Canes

In San Jose Thursday, it looked like the Sharks would be taking the night off after 20 minutes of play.

The visiting Carolina Hurricanes blew into town and managed to hang three on the scoreboard in the fist period.

Sebastian Aho scored twice and Victor Rask added a goal in the opening frame to stake the Canes to the big lead.

But the Sharks came back in the second period with two goals and entered the third period down, 4-2.

Jeff Skinner scored in the middle frame for Carolina.

“It was a wild night,” Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer said. “It was one of those crazy nights. Over a long season we’re going to have games like this. We’ll take it. We’ve been on the other end of these before. It’s nice to be on the right side of it.”

Special teams won the game for the Sharks as Logan Couture and Joe Thornton struck on the power play and Melker Karlsson and Barclay Goodrow scored on the penalty kill.

“Our 5-on-5 play early was good,” Hurricanes head coach Bill Peters said. “Our specialty teams hurt us tonight. We were minus-4 on special teams. It’s tough to win when you do that.”

Two goals in the third period got the teams to extra time and Brent Burns ended the rally early when he scored with just 22 seconds into the extra session for the 5-4 win.

“Pretty good game for the fans probably, huh?” Burns said. “It’s hockey. Just the last swings. That game had everything in it. Tough start, great finish. You got to try to learn what we were struggling with and it worked at the end. It felt good.”

Martin Jones picked up the win on 21 saves.

Cam Ward took the loss on 28 saves.

“We were changing on both of them, and I think there were some turnovers. We had to get back on those,” Skinner said after the loss.
