In Ottawa, the San Jose Sharks posted two goals in the middle frame on Thursday night and remained undefeated on the new season with a 2-1 win over the Senators.
Logan Couture and Kevin Labanc scored in the second period to erase a one-goal lead of the Sens.
“Coming to Canada is fun for a few of us who are from this area. Myself, I played junior here,” Couture said “It adds a little extra step to your game. You want to impress people, your family, your friends that you grew up with. It’s a fun trip coming out here.”
James Reimer made 30 saves to get the win.
“We grinded, we battled, so many guys were blocking shots, sacrificing the body, taking hits,” Reimer said. “To me, it’s a pleasure to watch. When you’re playing and guy after guy that jumps over the bench, they’re willing to do what it takes to win, it makes for a good feeling.”
The Sharks have won all three of their games thus far.
“I think you’re going to see a lot of those kinds of wins this year, where we’re going to have to grind it out,” San Jose head coach Bob Boughner said. “Especially on the road. I think that’s probably the biggest difference, that grind mentality. Last year, instead of making easy plays or the right plays, we might’ve tried to force it and look for offense in certain situations. Now, you’ve got a room full of guys that are all saying the right things and doing the right things.”
Matt Murray made 22 saves in the loss, it was his first game of the season.
“I’ve got to give them credit, they did a heck of a job getting traffic to the net,” Murray said of the Sharks. “I had a real tough time seeing a lot of those point shots. That’s kind of their game; they’re really good at that.”
