SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Sharks now lead the series 3-2 over the Colorado Avalanche following game five at the SAP Center.
About seven minutes into the game, what could have been a goal by the Sharks was called off, due to a high-stick penalty by Timo Meier just in front of the net, only a split second before the puck went into the net. So, with the goal called off, Meier sent to the penalty box, the Avalanche had their first power play of the game, but unfortunately could not capitalize.
The Sharks kept the Avalanche out of their offensive zone for nearly 14 minutes of the game, holding them to only one shot on goal. Overall, the Sharks led 39-22 shots for the whole game.
The teams would hold at zero through most of the second period, when with just about three minutes remaining, a ricochet off of Tyler Jost on a Martin Jones rebound allows the Avalanche to score first.
But with only seconds remaining a shot from Logan Couture from the point through traffic finally finds the back of the net. The teams go off to the second intermission tied at one-apiece.
Midway through the third period, Tomas Hertl catches a loose puck in the crease to give the Sharks their first lead of the night.
With only about two minutes remaining, Philipp Grubauer is pulled from the net for the extra skater. San Jose missed two separate chances for the empty net goal, but Jones was able to stope everything that the Avalanche could throw at him during a 15 second barrage at the end the game.
The Sharks held on for the 2-1 win.
