Sharks keep pace in Pacific with 4-1 win over Vancouver

In San Jose Thursday night, the San Jose Sharks kept pace with the Vegas Golden Knights and defeated the visiting Vancouver Canucks, 4-1.

Martin Jones made 43 saves to pick up the win as the Sharks trail the Pacific Division leaders by 10 points.

“It was a big win,” Jones said. “Every game from here on out is important. We’re fighting for our playoff lives. So, big two points.”

San Jose improved to 31-19-8 and stayed two points up on the Calgary Flames who beat the Nashville Predators Thursday, 4-3.

“It was a tough game. We needed a couple things. We needed [Jones] to be very good, and he was excellent. He was our best player. We needed that tonight. We looked a little tired, I thought. We needed that and we got some timely goals and did just enough to win. So, we’ll take it,” San Jose head coach Peter DeBoer said.

Marcus Sorensen, Brent Burns, Mikkel Boedker, and Chris Tierney all scored for the Sharks.

“I felt good. I just wanted to play aggressively today. I thought the guys did a good job in front of the net. I was able to just kind of focus on the shooter tonight and not worry about anything else,” Jones said after the game.

Daniel Sedin had the Canucks’ lone goal in the loss.

“I thought we generated a lot of good opportunities, a lot of shots, a lot of chances. We didn’t spend a lot of time in our own end,” Vancouver’s Bo Horvat said after the loss.

Anders Nilsson made 26 saves in taking the loss as the Canucks dropped to 22-30-6 and appear to a sellers market in the trade season.

“There are going to be games when you play well and lose,” Vancouver coach Travis Green said. “I thought it was one of those games tonight.”
