Sharks edge out Panthers, 2-1 Pavelski scores 300th NHL goal

In Sunrise Friday night, Aaron Dell made 39 saves to help the San Jose Sharks defeat the Florida Panthers, 2-1.

“The guys played really well,” Dell said. “There were some huge shot blocks when we were [5-on-6] to preserve the win. They had a lot of shots, but we didn’t give them a whole lot of chances on those shots.”

The feature story from he game was the 300th career NHL goal scored by Joe Pavelski for the Sharks.

“It’s nice. Definitely proud of it,” said Pavelski, who is the 199th player, 18th born in the United States, to reach the milestone in League history. “It’s one of those things you just keep moving forward. We’ve been playing a lot better. Our line has been creating more chances. They’re going to start to go in. I don’t think we were really worried about that.”

Chris Tierney also scored for San Jose, the game-winner, in the third.

“I didn’t really see it wholly,” Tierney said f his sharp-abgle shot on goal. “I thought the angle I hit it off his back that it was going to go in. I thought I saw something cross the line. I’m glad we have instant replay and they can check that out.”

Pavelski broke an 11-game scoring drought with the marker.

“He’s been really close the last few games, getting better and better,” Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer said. “You could see it coming. It’s a lot of goals. That’s quite an accomplishment. His whole career is a great story.”

San Jose improved to 14-8-2 with the win.

Colton Sceviour scored the lone goal for the Panthers to give them an early 1-0 lead.

“They play a quick game, and when teams are coming downhill at you a lot, putting pressure on you, it’s tough to break out. We were sitting back a little too much and not ending cycles and causing longer shifts than were needed,” Sceviour said of the Sharks after the loss.

Roberto Luongo made 30 saves in the loss as the Panthers dropped to 10-13-2.
