Brock Nelson opens the scoring at 14:56, when his shot from along the boards passes up James Reimer to the opposite side of the net. But Sharks Alexander Barabanov, only a minute later finds the back of Ilya Sorokin’s net to even the score on a powerplay. Brent Burns and Tomas Hertl were credited with the assist.
Jasper Weatherby scored the go-ahead goal with 2:28 remaining in the period, to give the Sharks the 2-1 lead going into the intermission.
The Islanders evened the score when Sebastian Aho wristed the puck from behind the net to a waiting Zach Parise in front of the net, who reversed the direction to the net.
At 16:31 into the second period, Logan Couture scored on a powerplay goal, when his shot from the top of the circle beats Sorokin stick side to put the Sharks back up 3-2. But it would be only 19 seconds later, when Adam Pelech’s goal would bring the two teams even again.
The teams would remain knotted at 3-3 through balance of regulation, without a goal during the overtime shift, forcing a shootout. Couture was the only player to score for the game winner.
Reimer had 44 saves in the win.
