SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Sharks improved their position with a big win Thursday night at SAP Center against the Montreal Canadiens in a 5-2 final. The win moves them to one point out of first place in the Pacific Division.
The Sharks haven’t lost to the Canadiens since 1999, won their twelveth straight game to the Eastern Conference team. The Canadiens are currently holding a wild card position for the post season.
Martin Jones took the win in the net for the Sharks, with 37 saves in the night. Former Sharks netminder took the loss for the Canadiens in their net, with 20 saves.
The first goal of the night, came at 6:55 into the game, when Tomas Hertl scored after a wraparound. Marcus Sorensen scored his fourth goal, in three games, with his goal midway through the period. The Canadiens earned a late goal, off the stick of Artturi Lehkonen.
Each team scored a goal in the second period. Joe Thornton at 7:46, assisted by Kevin Lebanc and Sorensen. Andrew Shaw scored at 15:18 to keep the gap at a single goal, for the final goal of the period.
The last period, San Jose continued to increase their lead, at 6:08 when Timo Meier’s backhand shot beat Niemi. The final nail came six seconds from the end, on an empty net goal scored by Gustav Nyquist, earning him his first goal since his arrival with the Sharks last month.
