PITTSBURGH – The first game of the 2016 Stanley Cup Final certainly lived up to its billing and hype Monday night.
The Pittsburgh Penguins used two goals in the first period from Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary, 1:02 apart, to build a 2-0 lead in the first period.
But as expected the San Jose Sharks did not go quietly in Game 1. After finding their game in the intermission and adjusting to the Penguins’ speed, something they did not face in the Western Conference Playoffs, the Sharks scored twice in the middle frame to knot the score heading into the third period.
Tomas Hertl scored the first goal for the Sharks, also their first as a Stanley Cup contestant.
Patrick Marleau added a goal with less than two minutes to go in the second.
The third period featured the Pens taking shots on Martin Jones n the Sharks net and finally Nick Bonino scored to give the Pens a 3-2 lead and the win.
Matt Murray got the win on 24 saves. Jones took the loss making 38 saves for the Sharks.
Brent Burns picked up two assists in the loss.
