In San Jose, the Sharks’ Tomas Hertl scored in extra time on Thursday in a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Flyers forced the extra session when Joel Farabee scored with 4:03 left in the third period to tie the game, 2-2.
“I thought we gave a great effort, I thought we really gave ourselves a chance to win, and that’s all you can really ask for,” Farabee said. “Obviously not happy with the loss, but to get a point in a ame like that I think shows a lot about this group.”
James Reimer made 23 saves in the Sharks win.
“I thought we played a solid game, one of our best this season,” Reimer said. “When we’re committed, [we] block shots, [get] huge plays from guys. It’s fun to play behind these guys.”
The Flyers dropped to 13-12-6.
“Tonight I’m going to focus on the positives,” Flyers head coach Mike Yeo said. “I definitely saw some tired mistakes out there. When you’re tired sometimes the execution isn’t quite there, sometimes your pace isn’t quite there. I thought the will and the compete was there all night.
“Obviously I think we have to continue to focus on trying to build our game. That’s not the game we want to be playing where we’re spending that much time in our own zone. We don’t want to be a team that’s getting outshot, outchanced.”
The Flyers took a 1-0 lead in the game off a goal from Morgan Frost in the first period.
Logan Couture and Brent Burns were the San Jose strikers.
“We dug in and came from behind and did a lot of good things,” Sharks head coach Bob Boughner said. “It could’ve been nice to find some puck luck earlier. But we found a way to come back.”
The Sharks improved to 17-14-4.
“It was a big goal for us because we needed the two points before the [four-game] road trip,” Hertl said. “I think we played way better [than the 8-7 shootout win against the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday]. We were way better in details and the [defensive] zone, and we even got more chances than last game. It was a good game.”
Felix Sandstrom made 43 saves in the Flyers loss, it was his NHL debut.
“Honestly, we should probably spend 30 seconds to talk about their goalie,” Reimer said. “Hats off to him.”
