LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Logan Couture scored the game winning goal in double overtime to give the Sharks the 4-3 win over the Golden Knights in the second round of the Western Conference Playoffs following a close game, unlike the previous game.
In the first period, William Karlsson scored to give the Golden knights the first goal of the night with just over two minutes remaining. Unlike the previous game, that would be the only goal for the period.
Karlsson scored again only 26 seconds into the second period, when his shot from the circle beat Martin Jones glove side to the back of the net. But mid period, Brent Burns would find the net when his shot from near the blue line ricochet off a Las Vegas player into the net. The Sharks would even the score, when Tomas Hertl passed the puck to Logan Couture in the slot, to re-direct it to the back of the net. On a four-on-four, Burns wrapped around the net from behind to beat Mark-Andre Fleury to the net near the pipes giving the Sharks their first lead of the series. The goal ultimately led to a review by officials, but the play on the ice stood. The Sharks lead 3-2 going into the second intermission.
The Golden Knight’s Nate Schmidt shot the puck from just above the far circle into the net, with just over five minutes remaining in regulation to tie the game, and ultimately forcing the overtime period.
During the first overtime period, the Golden Knights began to celebrate after Jonathans Marshessault’s goal with 3:02 remaining, that was ultimately called off due to goaltender interference, and the game continued onward. Then 6:13 Into the second overtime, Couture caught the puck and sent it to the net, beating a sprawled Fleury, and earning the game winning goal.
The Sharks tied the series at one-apiece as both teams head to San Jose for game three.
