Sequin’s OT goal sends Stars past Jets

In Dallas, Tyler Sequin scored in extra time on Wednesday night to give the Stars a 3=2 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

“I just thought that [Blake Wheeler] was baiting me,” Seguin said. “Quick shot last second, and the puck was in the air, and I felt like I got another whack on it. … I thought it went in right away, and happy it did.”

Jamie Benn hit for a goal and two points in the Dallas win.

“He played to his strengths, used his speed, went to the net,” Benn said. “[Seguin] made a great pass. That was a big goal for us.”

Jake Oettinger made 20 saves far Dallas in the win.

Wheeler and Mark Scheifele scored for the Jets in regulation.

“Every time we play these guys, we have good games, hard games, close games,” Winnipeg coach Dave Lowry said. “Obviously, with where both teams are positioned in the standings, it was going to have the makeup of a real tight, heavy game.”

The Stars improved to 28-20-2.

Benn’s goal came off the Dallas penalty kill.

“It’s great to get that shorty, I’ll tell you that,” Dallas head coach Rick Bowness said. “We needed a goal. We had the chances that we had previous to that and [didn’t score]. We needed to score in that period.”

Denis Gurianov also scored for the Stars.

“Trying to protect a one goal lead, I think maybe we sat back a little bit too much through the period,” The Jets’ Josh Morrissey said. “It was a long time to sort of sit back, I think that’s where you have to keep pushing. I’d have to go back and watch it. Obviously, you’d like to push for the third goal and pull ahead by two.

“It’s a Central Division game against Dallas, we have a lot of these grinding type of games. Managed to push it to overtime. We score in OT, it’s a different story. There’s a lot of good things in that game. We gave up more shots (39) than we’d like to see. We’ll look at it and find ways to get better.”

The Jets dropped to 22-20-9.

Connor Hellebuyck made 36 saves in the loss.

“So [Seguin] shot [the puck] at my blocker and I blockered it up and as it was descending, I got another piece of it and knocked it up again,” Hellebuyck said. “Then that’s where it ran into his stick, and he swatted at it. For me, I knocked it up twice, which had to be over my shoulder. I don’t know exactly where it was at the net, but it was close. Definitely close.”
