The Ottawa Senators and Jean-Gabriel Pageau signed a three-year contract this week that pays the forward an average of $3.1 million per year.
Pageau seems to have generated the interest from the Senators because of his playoff
scoring this past season.
With Ottawa reaching the Eastern Conference Finals, Pageau netted eight goals to help drive the Sens past the Boston Bruins and New York Rangers before succumbing to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
“As an organization, we are thrilled that we got this contract done,” Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said.
“Arbitration is definitely a path we did not want to go down with Jean-Gabriel, especially the way he’s performed over the course of the last few seasons. He showed that he was definitely deserving of this contract.
“Any player that has a history of raising his game, whether it was in junior playoffs or [AHL] playoffs or NHL playoffs, I think you have to give credit for what he’s accomplished. We’re really happy to have him on board for the next three years.”
Pageau, a restricted free agent, scored 12 goals and kicked in 33 points in 82 games during the regular season.
The Pageau signing is the only one inked by the Senators.
In other news this off season, former Senators player and current adviser to hockey operations, Daniel Alfredsson, stepped down from that position with the following statement.
“After two enjoyable years learning about the front office of hockey with the Senators, I’m pleased to pass along that I’ve made the decision to step away from the game and will take this time to evaluate what professional challenge I will pursue next.”
“I want to thank the Senators for the opportunity; it has enabled me to understand the type of commitments required to work in hockey should I determine that to be my future path. Our first order of business is getting established in our new home in Ottawa and returning to Gothenburg, with my family, to visit Swedish family and friends for the summer. We look forward to sharing the details of what’s next for the Alfredsson family in the future.”
The decision had been rumored ahead of the July 1 announcement.
Alfredsson has been the face of the Ottawa Senators throughout his career and the decision to leave the organization was unexpected by fans.
