The Ottawa Senators’ season is rapidly becoming a frustration like no other.
On Tuesday night, the Sens lost, 4-2, to the Oilers in Edmonton, and fell to 1-8-1 on the season. They have not posted a win since opening night.
Jesse Puljujarvi scored twice for the Oilers, his first two NHL goals, as the Oilers bolted out to a 4-0 lead before surrendering two third period goals to the Senators.
“I’ve been talking to [Puljujarvi] quite a bit. He’s such a good kid,” Oilers head coach Dave Tippett said. “It’s great to see him get on the board. He’s one of our top guys being around, not just getting chances himself, but being able to create chances for other people, so you’d like to see him get rewarded for that work. Tonight, he got rewarded for it.”
Mikko Koskinen made 23 saves to get the victory.
Cedric Paquette and Tim Stutzle ruined the shutout bid with two goals in the third period for Ottawa.
“Tim Stutzle was incredible tonight, especially in the third period,” Ottawa head coach D.J. Smith said. “Blocking shots, scoring a goal, you could see his desperation to help his team out.
“Thomas Chabot wasn’t supposed to play and willed himself in there tonight. These guys care about each other. This young group is battling. It’s unfortunate we haven’t been able to dig our way out of this, but it’s not for a lack of effort.”
Darnell Nurse and Leon Draisaitl added single markers for the Oilers.
“Tonight was more a good team win, we did a lot of things on the positive side from a team aspect,” Tippett said. “We had a couple of young players in Jesse and Bouchard who were contributors in the game, so it is probably nice to talk about other guys.”
Marcus Hogberg made 21 saves in the loss.
“When I got out there this morning and skated, I tried it, got a few hits, a few tight turns, and it was feeling great,” Chabot said. “When you’re going through times like that, to sit the first game out, it [stinks], you want to be out there, you want to help the team, you want to be there whether it’s a win or a loss. I was happy I was able to get out there, and obviously I was feeling good and everything was holding up well on the ice.”
