In Detroit, the Red Wings trailed the visiting Ottawa Senators on Wednesday night, 2-1, in the third period before Dylan Larkin knotted the game, 2-2, to force extra time at 11:15 of the third.
The Senators replied with a goal from Shane Pinto at 2:05 of the extra session for a 3-2 win.
“If you get possession for most of the time, there’s a good chance you’ll score,” Pinto said. “I thought we did a good job of bringing the puck back and waiting for the right look.”
Joonas Korpisalo made 23 saves in the win.
“I think we’re going in the right direction,” Senators coach Jacques Martin said. “We seem to be maturing and we’re handling the ups and downs of a game better.”
Ottawa moved to 20-25-2.
The Red Wings struck first in the game to take a 1-0 lead in the opening stanza on a marker from Daniel Sprong at 8:57.
“I thought it was a tight-checking game where we didn’t make many mistakes,” Larkin said. “We kept them to the outside most of the night, but they got one coming out of the penalty box and we had to get it back.”
Ottawa relied in the middle frame on a strike by Mark Kastelic at 3:09 to tie the game, 1-1.
Detroit dropped to 26-18-6.
“This was an outstanding month because we put ourselves back in the fight,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “That’s what we’ve wanted since I’ve been here, a chance to be in the fight in the second half of the season, and now we’re there. It’s going to be exciting to see what we can do with it.”
Ottawa claimed a 2-1 in the second on a goal from Brady Tkachuk at 14:32, the goal came off a breakaway as Tkachuk was leaving the leaving penalty box.
Alex Lyon made 22 saves in the loss.
