In Raleigh, Josh Norris scored at the 14-minute mark of the third period to give the
Ottawa Senators a 3-2 lead over the Hurricanes on Thursday night.
The Sens would protect that advantage for the win to snap a six-game slide.
Anton Forsberg made 47 saves in the Ottawa win.
“We got in at 3 o’clock in the morning last night, and I told them this morning that this would be one of the gutsier ones to get off the schneid,” Ottawa head coach D.J. Smith said. “[The Hurricanes] shoot every puck on net no matter where it’s from. They’re up tight on you, there’s not a lot of room. It’s a perfect place to get that win that we needed.”
Ottawa improved to 5-15-1.
“We just tried to spring ‘Formy,'” Ottawa’s Chris Tierney said. “He’s got great speed. You can never catch him in full stride with the puck. He’s going to create room and probably good things are going to happen.”
Teuvo Teravainen and Andrei Svechnikov had goals for the Hurricanes.
“The guys played hard,” Carolina head coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “I don’t really have much to say. It kind of felt like this (during) the last two-week stretch. We’re playing as good hockey as we can play. Tonight we did everything right, but we didn’t get the win.”
Alex Formenton hit for a pair of goals in the Ottawa victory.
Carolina dropped to 15-6-1.
Carolina took 49 shots on the night, a season high.
“Are they feeling it? Yep,” Brind’Amour said. “They’re upset that they’re not scoring and they’re not getting the results, so it’s a double whammy. You’re not going to suddenly come out and do something different to get those results. You have to do it right, and I think this team has been doing it right. It will work out. We will start scoring a lot more.”
Antti Raanta made 17 saves in the Canes loss.
