Senators scuttle Flames

In Ottawa, the Senators got a strong performance in the net from Filip Gustavsson who  in a 2-1 win over the Calgary Flames on Monday night.  made 35 saves

It was Gustavsson’s first NHL start.

“I got a good sleep yesterday, but today, even the whole morning skate, was like little butterflies in the stomach and a little hard to eat,” Gustavsson said. “But when I got the first shot on net and the first power play came, it felt like I was in the game, and then [the butterflies] were gone.”

The Senators have three injured goalies.

“He did everything in there tonight,” Senators head coach D.J. Smith said of Gustavsson. “He looked calm, made the saves he had to make. We hung him out on that breakaway there at the end, but he did everything that you want your goalie to do.”

Johnny Gaudreau was the lone goal scorer for the Senators.

“Our top two lines will probably have to produce higher-level scoring chances,” Calgary head coach Darryl Sutter said.

Chris Tierney and Ryan Dzingel were the Ottawa strikers.

“We battled really hard,” Smith said. “Defensively, we were blocking shots and boxing out. That was a hard-fought game. They gave us no room.”

The Flames dropped to 15-15-3.

“This team has trouble scoring goals,” Sutter said. “It’s not a two-game thing. … We’ll have to check for chances.”

Ottawa improved to 11-20-3.

“I like being here and I like putting that sweater on,” Dzingel said. “It just feels normal to me because I’ve been here for so long, development camp when I was 18 years old. I’m playing with really good linemates right now.”

Jacob Markstrom made 21 saves in the game with a complete lack of support.

“This hurts,” the Flames’ Elias Lindholm said. “It was a game we needed.”
